Writing

I enjoy writing of all types from technical instructional manuals to journal entries to poetry and more. In many cases this is just a way for me to arrange my thoughts, be able to replicate something I’ve done, or work through things. For journal entries, it is a way for me to somewhat reliably remember an event. From what I have heard and read, the human brain does not store memories in a “read-only” fashion, so each time you revisit that memory it may change and that change may perpetuate to the next time it is “remembered” and possibly changed again. That is why some of my journal entries end with a note that too much time has passed since the event so I do not trust that all the details would be true at least to my perception at the time. On the other hand, a memory is more than just facts. Sometimes the feelings around a memory or thought will take hold resulting in a short story or an essay. Those are the sorts of things that you will find here. Please enjoy (or not) these brief glimpses into my mind and accounts of certain days in my and my family’s life.

Cheers

Cheers! After spending a bit of time in the UK recently, mostly in the Midlands, it became apparent that I just did not understand the proper use of the word “cheers”. You hear it so much around here that I would find myself just about to say it myself now on several occasions for reasons

Exploring Chicago

The kids had one week all summer where they didn’t have some sort of activity planned.  Unfortunately, things at work were pretty fluid with travel and meetings, so I was hesitant to make any major plans.  However, about a week before the kids were free I finally decided that we needed to take some time

Camping

When Ann asked me if she could go on a camping trip with a friend and her friend’s parents I was a little surprised.  The first time I had taken the kids camping was the final night of a summer vacation in 2009.  After that Ann had vowed that she would never go camping again.

Basketball Hoop

A few weeks ago I bought a basketball hoop for the kids.  I didn’t want to get one of the inexpensive portable ones as they seem to get beat up pretty easily.  At the same time even your entry-level in-ground model was several hundred dollars plus another few hundred to have installed.  After a bit

Summer Road Trip

The idea for this vacation started with wanting to see Mammoth Caves in Kentucky.  Since we were driving all that way we decided that we might as well head to Nashville as well.  I didn’t want to schedule more than four hours of driving at a time, so we filled in the rest of the

Chasing DQ

Tonight Ann wanted to attend a Nerf gun war with her youth group. William, however, was too young to attend.  Although we wasn’t expressing any sourness toward the situation, (he even eagerly discussed the various pros and cons of the various Nerf guns that have accumulated in the house over the years with Ann before

99 Problems Parody

This parody was written for one of our team members at work when she left the company leaving behind some ongoing projects. It contains references to projects and vendors specific to our job, so some things may not make sense. (To the tune of “99 Problems” by Jay-Z) If you’re having time problems I feel
