Cooking

I have always enjoyed cooking, but I did not really start to take a keen interest into it until I became a single father of two young children who needed daily sustenance, preferably of a nutritious type. My repertoire and understanding of techniques started expanding as I consumed various cooking content in order to increase the variety of meals and ingredients used. Over time, my interest in cooking, the science behind it, the tools and techniques used, and the ingredients expanded and continues to grow. For more food content, please visit the Pictures / Videos link in the top menu and select the Food section.

That said, while I have consumed countless hours of cooking content over the years from professional chefs to home cooks, this section is not meant to be any sort of authoritative source on cooking. Instead, it is a collection of things that have made an impact to my cooking journey that I want to save for my own memory, or in case my kids or others want to understand how I prepared something. If something here sparks an interest in you to try or further research a recipe, technique, tool, or idea, then that is, as they say, just icing on the cake.

A gin martini in a martini glass surrounded by the items used to make it.

Gin Martini

I like a plain gin-based martini, usually with a little added olive brine, and stirred–not shaken. I really wanted to like the vodka “shaken, not stirred” martini so I could do a (bad) James Bond impression when ordering it. Although bartenders may get that all the time and not really find it funny. Timings Prep: […]

Tartar Sauce

This is a quick and easy tartar sauce that is made with items I usually have on hand. It tastes great and can be tweaked to your liking. There really is no need for me to have store-bought tartar sauce and instead I can make small batches on demand. I tested two batches of this,

Hard Boiled Eggs

I have read way too many articles and watched way too many videos on the subject of hard boiled eggs. In the end it seems that there are a number of factors–real or imagined–that contribute to how easy it is to remove the shell, how to keep the shell from cracking, the firmness of the

German Potato Salad

This is a great side dish for a picnic. However, it also works as a warm side-dish. I prefer a sharper, more acidic flavor, so do not add any sugar to temper the vinegar. However, you may add some sugar to taste when making the sauce. If you are serving warm then the initial cooking

Finished pork meatballs in curry served over rice on a white plate.

Pork Meatballs in Curry

This is nice, earthy, cold-weather comfort food. I like to eat it over Basmati rice cooked with chicken stock instead of water, and with some added turmeric. The spices in the recipe can be adjusted such as reducing some of the more “earthly” flavors like cumin, coriander, and cloves, and adding things like thyme, sage,

Finished mustard cole slaw served in a clear bowl.

Mustard Cole Slaw

This is a quick dish that works well for a picnic or on pulled pork sandwiches. It is also a great way to use up excess cabbage from other recipes. I like this recipe as it has a bite to it along with a little sweetness. Additional things such as shredded carrots, hot sauce, and

Gyro Meat

To make Gyros I pair thin slices of this meat with pita bread, lettuce, tomato, onions, feta cheese, and Tzatziki sauce, (I am still working on the recipe for the latter). Although it tastes great on its own which is good since I usually run out of pita bread before running out of meat. The

Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf

This meatloaf began as a Halloween-themed recipe I found on the Internet. However, my son and I liked it so much I cut the recipe into a third of the original, and cut out the “zombie-style” decorations for cooking any time of the year. Even though I usually use bison, the bacon around it and
