Writing

I enjoy writing of all types from technical instructional manuals to journal entries to poetry and more. In many cases this is just a way for me to arrange my thoughts, be able to replicate something I’ve done, or work through things. For journal entries, it is a way for me to somewhat reliably remember an event. From what I have heard and read, the human brain does not store memories in a “read-only” fashion, so each time you revisit that memory it may change and that change may perpetuate to the next time it is “remembered” and possibly changed again. That is why some of my journal entries end with a note that too much time has passed since the event so I do not trust that all the details would be true at least to my perception at the time. On the other hand, a memory is more than just facts. Sometimes the feelings around a memory or thought will take hold resulting in a short story or an essay. Those are the sorts of things that you will find here. Please enjoy (or not) these brief glimpses into my mind and accounts of certain days in my and my family’s life.

California Trip

6/9/2013: A morning flight out of Detroit brought us to Oakland around 1PM local time by way of Phoenix.  The hotel was near the airport, and we checked in quickly.  The room had one king-sized bed and a pull-out couch, so the kids shared the bed while I took the couch.  This turned out to

Ann went over to a friend’s house the night before and was spending the day over there, so William and I had a whole day to ourselves.  In the morning, we played Minecraft for a while and built a long path through deserts, jungles and mountains full of tunnels, bridges and other markers that would

Short Meeting

This parody was written after a weekly meeting that usually runs for a long time ended pretty quickly. With the unexpected time on my hands I suppose I could have gotten some work done, but instead I wrote this. (To the tune of “American Pie” by Don McLean) A long, long time ago I can

Walking on Logs

Across from our house there’s a drainage basin that ends up feeding the Rouge River. There’s also a bit of wooded area around that. Over the past week there has been a lot of noise from the other side of the basin and sadly a good portion of the trees have been cut down. The

Veteran’s Day

Thanks to all who have given their lives while serving in the Unites States Armed Services. If you don’t know, William’s middle name is in honor of one such person. You see, William’s great grandfather on his mom’s paternal side was a Marine. During World War II, he was sent to fight in the Pacific

Pitching Practice

For his last birthday, I bought William a multi-purpose net. The main driver was that we had destroyed a soccer ball by kicking it against the concrete porch too much. Why were we kicking it at the porch? Well, at that point we used a couple of the porch columns as goal markers and between
